The collection contains newspaper accounts, correspondence, military orders and messages, military clothing and equipment, medals, etc. pertaining primarily to Whittlesey's military career in World War I. Documented is his service with the American Expeditionary Forces (A.E.F.), the near loss of his battalion in the Argonne Forest, and his receipt of commendations from various governments and organizations. Also included is a letter Whittlesey wrote to a friend shortly before he committed suicide, and materials relating to the Charles Whittlesey Room that was dedicated at the Williams Club (New York City) in 1948.

Charles White Whittlesey (1884-1921) was born in Florence, Wis., and graduated from Williams College in 1905. After receiving his law degree from Harvard University in 1908, he worked for the New York City firm of Murray, Prentice & Howland (1908-1911), and then went into practice with his friend and classmate, J.
